Gen 16-19

Ref Story Words & themes Ref Related Gospel
Gen. 16 Sarai does not have children, gives Abram Hagar. When Hagar becomes pregnant, she treats Sarai badly. (The pride of the fertile?) Hagar flees, is found by God and told to return.

Annunciation here different from Luke. The child’s name will be Ishmael (“God has heard.”) – a wild ass of a man who will fight everyone.

Abram gave Sarai to Pharoah. Sarai gives Abram to Hagar.
Gen. 17:1-16 Promises according to P. Abram is 99yrs old. Promise made (again?) for no apparent reason: offspring who are kings in many nations and the land of Canaan. Price: circumcision & name change
Gen. 17: 17-26 Abraham laughs and pleads for Ishmael. Ishmael not to be forgotten, but the covenant will run to Sarah’s child. Sarah laughs (J), as does Abraham (P.)
Gen. 18:1-15 Three visitors. Abraham offers hospitality and they promise Sarah a son. Sarah is hidden and laughs, but God hears what is hidden.
Gen. 18:16 – 33 Abraham’s argument with God. The men leave for S&G and God wonders if God should hide what God is about to do. Decides on full disclosure so that Abraham knows and can teach God’s ways.  If there are 10 righteous, God will not destroy it.

(Evidently, there were less than 10 in Lot’s family.)

Matthew 13:24 – 30 The Parable of the Weeds among the Wheat.
Gen. 19 In Sodom. Lot is reasonably hospitable, (offering his two virgin daughters) but the men of Sodom would have raped the two angels had the angels not blinded them. In the morning, the angels drag Lot, his wife and daughters out of Sodom which they then destroy. Lot’s wife looks back. Later, Lot’s daughters rape him while he is drunk, and their children are the ancestors of the Moabites and Ammonites.
